Churches Looking for A Pastor Must Remember:
“When There Is No Vision, The People Perish”

When there is no vision, the people perish.
Christian leadership books often quote Proverbs 29:18 as a rationale for a church writing a vision statement. The KJV version reads, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” This wording fits nicely for those who want to persuade others regarding the need for a vision statement.

While it is good for leaders to communicate vision, churches doing a pastoral search and pastoral search committees should be aware that Proverbs 29:18 is not primarily talking about a leader’s vision. Rather, “vision” here refers to special revelation and the principle is that that apart from God’s Word, society quickly spins into moral chaos.

There are consequences for God’s people when the Word is not known. Indeed, Proverbs 29:18 submits:

Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law (Proverbs 29:18, ESV).

The word translated “prophetic vision” refers to special revelation or God’s Word. The word translated “cast off restraint” carries the idea of there being a total loss of social order. It is the same word used in Exodus 32:25 to describe the Israelite’s frenzy during the Golden Calf disaster. The NIV translation reads:

Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies (Exodus 32:25, NIV).

If a people do not hear God’s Word, then we can expect society to break down and even local churches to cast off restraint. “Social harmony and restraint cannot be achieved without the exhortations of the prophets and the teaching of the law.”

Public morality depends on knowing the law of God. Fabarez argues that the reason there is so much immorality in evangelicalism today is because God’s Word is not preached. Again, pastor search committees must own our basic need for God’s powerful Word.

Your Thoughts

How have you seen the need for vision within your own church? How have you seen God’s Word (vision) shape the actions of your church?

    A Prophetic Vision is “God’s Word”. The Vision was given, “Make Disciples”, and were not. Churches have compromised and preach lies misleading even the elect of God. No true understanding and FEAR of GOD.
    EX. – The selfish “feel good” messages like the Word Of faith preach with their potions and plans for health and wealth, and their actual denial of the blood of Jesus shed on the cross, teaching anyone could have died on the cross, and Jesus had to go to hell and die spiritually for every man (LIES). The wonders and signs they show are NOT scriptural, and are of the Devil.
    Or the churches saying unless you speak in tongues that your not spirit filled, making others feel worthless and rejected of God, when God is no respecter of any man.
    (The word “tongues” is PLURAL, so how many languages do you have. Not a sentence or phrase in some crazy unknown singular language, but full speech in multiple languages)
    There is only one passage teaching what it is to be spirit filled.
    When those who became “Spirit Filled” they praised God in their hearts (Eph. 5:19).
    Those at Pentecost didn’t speak some heavenly language, but known languages from those that were there from all the countries visiting.
    Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
    Act 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
    Act 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

    Eph 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding
    what the will of the Lord is.
    Eph 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess;
    but be filled with the Spirit;

    This is what is meant by being “Spirit Filled”:

    Eph 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and
    spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart
    to the Lord;
    Eph 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God (rich or poor, in sickness or in health) and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
    Eph 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

    Ecc 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
    Ecc 12:14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

    Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

    Churches and church organizations have totally lost touch with finding “the right Pastor”. If you check the requirements that churches and organizations want, they are looking for Pastors with Degrees, and a Master in Divinity… Our world would not be in the situation it is today if these so called educated Pastors took on the real responsibility, and doing what Jesus requires. Today we have a bunch of puffed up teachers and preachers that don’t disciple, but manipulate to control their congregations, which aren’t theirs. There are real men called of God to preach, and they have no earthly titles, but do have the real calling to make disciples and stand firmly on the Word. Churches, if you want a Pastor from Jesus Christ to teach and preach, then follow the requirements of God, and NOT man! Pastors aren’t made, they are Spiritually inspired, and have been given the gift from God for their duties. Our churches are full of Sadducees and Pharisees (those educated by man), and they were taught how to speek, what to say, and how to manipulate (witchcraft) the people with there great worship services and there eloquent sermons. Christians today don’t know Jesus (The Word, which is God). They live in sin with the false understanding of grace. There are no powerful true teaching and preaching on hell. There is no Fear of God!
    The real question is: Do you want a Pastor from God, or a well qualified man from the world?
